Countries discuss post-war security guarantees; Ukraine is not subject to collective defense as it is not part of the alliance
Germany is discussing security guarantees for Ukraine for a post-war period with its allies. The guarantees, however, will not be the same as those offered to a member country of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization).
In an interview with the German broadcaster ARD aired this Sunday (3.Jul.2022), Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that the guarantees are being prepared by diplomats.
“We are discussing with close friends the issue of security guarantees that we can provide. This is an ongoing process. It is clear that it will not be the same as if one were a member of NATO.”said the German chancellor.
Last Friday (July 1), Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the creation of a special group to discuss international security guarantees for Ukraine. According to him, the group’s task is to develop measures to prevent future aggressions against the country. The Ukrainian leader says he will not adopt the model applied by NATO.
The group is led by former secretary general of the military alliance Anders Fogh Rasmussen and, according to Zelensky, has influential figures from several countries.
In March, the Ukrainian president signaled a possible withdrawal by the country from its efforts to become a member of NATO. In addition to abdicating from joining the bloc, Ukraine is studying accepting some form of neutrality, that is, not being part of military alliances.
Russia views the expansion of the military alliance as a threat to its security and has cited Ukraine’s membership of the alliance as one of the reasons for the call. “special military operation” in the country, announced on February 24.
