David S. had been employed at the British Embassy in Berlin since 2020
German authorities have announced that they have arrested a British citizen employed at the British embassy in Berlin on suspicion of spying for Russia. The man, identified as David S., is suspected of having on at least one occasion “passed to a representative of the Russian secret services” a document “which he had obtained in the exercise of his duties at the embassy,” said the federal prosecutor’s office responsible for espionage cases.
The arrest, the magistrates explain, was the result of collaboration with the British authorities. “The accused received an unspecified amount of money in exchange for information.” The British citizen had been employed by the embassy since November 2020, in a position that has not yet been specified. “His apartment and workplace were raided,” the prosecutor’s office said.
The case joins a number of other espionage cases in recent years that German authorities blame Russia in the country.
