At least four people were killed and dozens injured after a local train derailed in southern Germany on Friday. This was reported by the news agency Reuters.

German newspapers Bild and Der Spiegel said twelve people were still missing on Friday night. The missing may be in hospital but have not been identified.

According to the news agency AFP, a representative of the Upper Bavarian police Stefan Sonntag says the train was very crowded at the time of the accident. According to a local newspaper, there were several schoolchildren on board. There are a total of 30 injured, 15 of whom were hospitalized.

Three of the dead were under the fallen wagon. The fourth victim died of his injuries later.

In Germany, nine-euro monthly tickets have been introduced throughout the country for the summer months. Cheap tickets are feared to cause congestion on trains.

Several of the train carriages fell off the tracks and some spun down the embankment. The accident occurred north of the Garmisch-Partenkirchen winter sports center in the Burgan region. The train was on its way to Munich.

Video on social media also spread from the scene of the accident.
