The German government has allowed Kiev to use German weapons against targets in Russia in the war in Ukraine. This was announced by spokesman Steffen Hebestreit in Berlin on Friday.

Like the USA, the German government is limiting the use to defense against Russian attacks on the Kharkiv region. Ukraine may therefore “use the weapons supplied for this purpose in accordance with its international legal obligations.”

In recent weeks, Ukraine has been attacked “particularly in the Kharkiv area from positions in the immediately adjacent Russian border region,” government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said on Friday. “We are jointly convinced that Ukraine has the right under international law to defend itself against these attacks.”
The government spokesman added: “For this purpose, it can also use the weapons supplied for this purpose in accordance with its international legal obligations; including those supplied by us.” Germany has supplied the Panzerhaubitze 2000 and the Mars II system to Ukraine, among others.
Germany follows suit: US previously allowed use of weapons against targets in Russia
The NATOIn recent days, countries have been controversially discussing the use of Western weapons on military targets in Russia. Ukraine has been demanding this for some time in order to be able to combat Russian positions more effectively in the war that has been going on for more than two years. So far, the country has mainly used its own missiles and drones for this purpose. Only on Thursday did the USA quietly allow the use of weapons.
The government spokesman explained that the German government is continuously adapting its support to the development of the war “together with our closest allies and in close dialogue with the Ukrainian government”. (fbu/dpa)
