The Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) of Chancellor Olaf Scholz won the elections in Brandenburg, a federal state that surrounds Berlin and where the Social Democrats have governed since the country’s reunification in 1990, by a narrow margin and despite the support of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), according to the first official data.
