The German Minister of Transport is sounding the alarm. According to him, he will have to take draconian measures such as a ban on driving on weekends if climate rules are not relaxed.
There are few left these days, but Volker Wissing is still a real one. This German Minister of Transport has previously presented himself as a champion of the unlimited Autobahn. He also worked hard to preserve the combustion engine. Volker is a member of the German VVD and that is still really the car party in Germany, it turns out.
Freedom fighter
But freedom fighter Volker is of course attacked by all kinds of evil forces in society. Just like the Netherlands, Germany has signed all kinds of treaties to shoot itself in the foot, ruin the economy and thus consume and emit less. And, according to Volker, ministers are obliged to take draconian measures if this self-imposed self-flagellation does not go far enough.
XR crowd
For example, the political boss claims that he will be forced to forbid German citizens from taking their cars on Saturdays and Sundays, if they really have to adhere to the imposed rules. Wissing even sent an urgent letter to his colleagues to this effect Image also faced. Undoubtedly this is a utopia for the XR crowd. But an absolute drama for the normal hardworking German who has a sports competition at the weekend, wants to go on an outing or just wants to go for a ride in the convertible.
Greens and Greenpeace accuse Volker of scaremongering
Julia Verlinden, leader of the Greens, with which the FDP and the Socialists form a coalition, calls Wissing's concerns as nonsense and scaremongering. Greenpeace goes one step further. They say Wissing is now turning his own failure to reduce emissions into a political tool. That's all well and good, but if emissions have to return to the levels that Germany has agreed on, that will be very painful, one way or another.
Car-free Sunday and/or Saturday?
At some point you will have to drive less. This is the harsh reality that Wissing is now rubbing harshly under the noses of his green friends. Knowing that there is of course absolutely no support among the general public for these types of draconian measures. And knowing that there will be new elections this year…Are you in favor of a car-free Sunday (and Saturday)? Let us know in the comments!
