BERLIN (Reuters) – Members of Germany’s pro-business Liberal Democratic Party (FDP) voted on Sunday by a large majority in favor of a coalition deal with the Social Democrats (SPD) and the Greens, paving the way for a triple alliance to form a new government next week.
The coalition, the first at the federal level among Green environmentalists, the FDP and Olaf Scholz’s center-left SPD, will end 16 years of conservative governments led by Chancellor Angela Merkel.
The SPD approved the deal on Saturday and the Greens are expected to announce the result of a member poll of the deal on Monday. The three parties hope that the lower house of parliament, the Bundestag, will vote for Scholz as chancellor on Wednesday.
The “traffic light” alliance, alluding to the respective colors of the parties, will usher in a new era of relations with Europe and plans to accelerate the digitization of the continent’s largest economy and focus on combating climate change.
