BERLIN (Reuters) – The German Football League (DFL) on Wednesday rejected an appeal for a season break for several weeks because of a sharp rise in Covid-19 cases in the country.
The DFL, which manages the top two divisions of German football, was responding to a request by Helge Leonhardt, president of the second-division club Erzgebirge Aue, that games be stopped until December.
Leonhardt said sport needs to set an example and put people’s safety first to lower the risk of new infections and reduce the burden on the German healthcare system.
“The DFL takes note of the comments of the president of the Erzgebirge Aue,” the organization said in a statement, adding that any further steps would follow the advice of state officials.
“The line approved by all 36 clubs (in the top two divisions) since the beginning of the pandemic has always been to act on state guidelines.”

“A self-imposed general lockdown towards a season break is out of the question,” the DFL said.
Germany recorded 66,884 new infections and 335 additional deaths from coronaviruses, bringing the total number of deaths to nearly 100,000, according to figures from the Robert Koch Institute for Infectious Diseases also released on Wednesday.
