German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Tuesday, March 22, noted that the sanctions against Russia have the opposite effect from the point of view of the EU countries, the newspaper reports. Zeit Online.
In his opinion, Europe and the allies have taken enhanced sanctions against Russia, which are aimed at the economic development of the Russian Federation. He stressed that the sanctions were “prepared for a long time, carefully and very precisely,” according to “Gazeta.Ru”.
Scholz, however, indicated that the EU must overcome all the consequences of the imposed restrictions. That is why Germany opposed a complete ban on Russian oil and gas, the chancellor explained. Many other EU member states that buy energy from the Russian Federation take a similar position, the head of government added.
“And no one should be left to fend for themselves in this matter,” Scholz said.
On March 19, Germany warned of a possible shortage of gas in the country next winter. German Economy Minister Robert Habek did not rule out that a failure in gas supplies to industrial enterprises could lead to a detrimental effect on other areas.
On March 11, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced that the European Commission would present by mid-May a plan to eliminate the EU’s dependence on Russian gas, oil and coal by 2027.
As Jamaladin Gasanov, a member of the State Duma Committee on Energy, noted in an interview with Izvestia, the EU is disingenuous when it talks about the possibility of reducing the consumption of Russian gas and oil and the rejection of energy from the Russian Federation.
On March 3, Minister Habek said that Berlin is partly feeling the impact of anti-Russian sanctions on the German economy. He stressed that gas exports from Russia should be replaced, and work is underway on this issue.
Talk about abandoning Russian energy resources has intensified in the West against the backdrop of Russia conducting a special operation to protect Donbass since February 24. A few days earlier, the situation in the region escalated due to shelling by the Ukrainian military. The authorities of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics announced the evacuation of residents to Russian territory, and also turned to Moscow for help. On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree recognizing the independence of the DNR and LNR.
