Georgian former president Mikhail Saakashvili has been transferred to a military hospital. Saakashvili’s lawyer told the prisoner.

Saakashvili’s doctor, for his part, told news agency AFP that the former president ended his protracted hunger strike immediately after the transfer. According to the doctor, Saakashvili’s condition was life-threatening during the transfer and he has been taken to the intensive care unit.

Saakashvili, 53, was on hunger strike for 50 days. Earlier on Friday, he said he would end his strike if he was transferred to a suitable treatment center.

According to doctors, Saakashvili did not receive the treatment he needed at the prison hospital.

Tens of thousands of people have protested in Georgia demanding the release of Saakashvili. The country’s government has refused doctors ’requests to transfer Saakashvili to a civilian hospital.
