Billionaire George Soros’ son, Alexander Soros, current president of the Open Society Foundation, declared support for Kamala Harris’ candidacy for the November elections, after Joe Biden announced his withdrawal this Sunday (21).
“It’s time for us all to unite behind Kamala Harris and defeat Donald Trump. She is the best and most qualified candidate we have. Long live the American dream,” Alexander wrote on his X profile as a caption to a photo alongside the vice president.
The Soros family is known for pumping millions of dollars each year into organizations that promote progressive causes around the world, including those that explicitly advocate abortion and drug decriminalization.
Harris receives important support, but is not unanimous
Just hours after confirming she is running for the Democratic presidential nomination following President Joe Biden’s resignation, Vice President Kamala Harris has received support from some governors, members of Congress and Bill and Hillary Clinton, although others have remained silent so far.
After giving up running for re-election, Biden was clear in giving his explicit support to Kamala, but other important members of the party, such as former President Barack Obama (2009-2017), showed their predisposition for a more open electoral process.
California Governor Gavin Newson; Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro; North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper; Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear; and Minnesota Governor Tim Waltz have all explicitly endorsed Kamala’s candidacy.
Other governors of key states, including Wisconsin’s Tony Evers and Michigan’s Gretchen Whitmer, did not make their support for Harris clear in their statements responding to Biden’s announcement on Sunday.
According to the portal The HillKamala and her team spent Sunday afternoon securing support from the three main groups in the House of Representatives.
Former President Bill Clinton (1993-2001) and former presidential candidate and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton endorsed Kamala shortly after Biden’s historic announcement that he would not seek re-election, following weeks of internal pressure, to make way for someone more capable of defeating Republican Donald Trump.
“It’s time to support Kamala Harris and fight with everything we have to get her elected. The future of the United States depends on it,” the Clintons said in a statement that contrasts with Obama’s stance, who called on the Democratic Party to nominate an “extraordinary candidate” for the November elections.
“We will be navigating new waters in the days ahead. But I have extraordinary confidence that our party leaders will be able to create a process from which an extraordinary candidate will emerge,” Obama said in a statement, leaving open the possibility of a more competitive process.
Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi all avoided mentioning Kamala Harris in their reactions to Biden’s decision to drop out of reelection.
Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison vowed the party would follow “established rules and procedures” to conduct a “transparent and orderly” process.
Kamala Harris issued a statement on Sunday thanking Biden for his support in making her the Democratic candidate for the presidential nomination and confirmed that she will seek the nomination, which is traditionally made official at the National Convention, to be held this year from August 19 to 22 in Chicago.
“It is an honor to have the President’s support and my intention is to pursue and obtain this nomination,” he said in a statement.
