George RR Martin has revealed that HBO is back at work on one of the spin-offs of Game of thrones previously set aside. It’s about the prequel series: 10,000 Ships. The information comes from an article on Martin’s blog in which he congratulates playwright Eboni Booth, who had just won the Pulitzer Prize for her play “Primary Truth.”
“Having never won a Pulitzer Prize, I can’t explain why the medal depicts Ben Franklin and not Joseph Pulitzer, but Eboni promised to update me after the ceremony. She is an extraordinarily talented young playwright and a joy to work with; when she’s not writing and producing her own award-winning plays on and off Broadway, she’s been keeping busy with me and HBO, working on a new pilot for 10,000 Ships, a Game of Thrones spinoff about Nymeria and the Rhoynar. We’re all very excited… although we’re still trying to figure out how to pay for ten thousand ships, three hundred dragons, and those giant turtles.”
What is 10,000 Ships
10,000 Ships was originally part of a trio of possible Game of Thrones prequels, titled 9 Voyages (aka Sea Snake), Flea Bottom, and 10,000 Ships. The project Sea Snake was to follow the ship that gives the series its name, responsible for some of the greatest sea voyages undertaken by a House of the Dragon character, Corlys Velaryon (played by Steve Toussaint). The project Flea Bottom it had to follow the place that gives its name to this work, namely the slum district of King’s Landing, present in both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon.
10,000 Ships will follow the journey of warrior princess Nymeria and her people, the Rhoynar, who moved from Essos to Dorne following their defeat by the Free Kingdom of Valyria in the Second Spice War. There, in Dorne, conflicts and incestuous marriages would give rise to one of Westeros’ most unique cultures, including the legendary House Martell.
Speaking of another project, namely A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, we know that the TV series has “a different tone” compared to Game of Thrones.
