Italian football club Genoa has announced the dismissal of its Ukrainian coach Andriy Shevchenko, just two months after he took over the coaching staff of the relegated team.
Shevchenko, the former Ukraine player and coach, was linked with Genoa on a contract that lasts until 2024 on the seventh of last November, but the team’s defeat in extra time against his former team Milan in the Italian Cup last Thursday, precipitated his departure after a series of bad results.
The club said in a statement: “The club thanks the coach and his support staff for the hard work they have done in recent months.”
After the dismissal, the club temporarily assigned the task of training the first team to former player Abdullah Konko, coach of the youth team, while Roberto Morgueta works as his assistant.
In its next match in the Italian league, Genoa will meet Fiorentina outside its stadium next Monday.
Genoa did not win any of the nine matches it played in the local league under the leadership of Shevchenko, drawing in three and losing in six of them, which caused it to fall to the 19th and penultimate place among the championship teams, five points behind the safety zone.
The team performed slightly better in the Italian Cup, beating Salernitana 1-0 last December and knocking him out of the tournament, leaving this only victory for coach Shevchenko before the team lost 3-1 in extra time against Milan in the round of 16.
