The Geneva Motor Show recovers but falls again. The 2024 edition was not enough to bring GIMS back to its former glory. Certainly not anything new given the participation and lack of enthusiasm shown by the many brands that defected and the few that instead decided to take part. The organization immediately understood the mood surrounding Palexpo and made the somewhat surprising announcement: the 2025 Geneva Motor Show has been cancelled.
The decision to stop the Geneva Motor Show
Alexandre de Senarclens, president of the Comité permanent du Salon international de l’Automobile Foundation, explained the reasons for the new stop of the GIMS, stopped for four years due to Covid and then the crisis generated by the pandemic in the automotive sector: “This extremely regrettable decision must not diminish the efforts and determination with which we have sought to regain our success. However, it must be said that the disinterest shown by manufacturers at the Geneva Motor Show in a difficult industrial context, the competition from the Paris and Munich motor shows favored by the national industry, as well as the level of investments necessary to maintain this motor show, give the final blow to a future edition”. The choice could therefore definitively put an end to the centenary history of the most famous Motor Show in Europe.
Space for GIMS Qatar in 2025
The Council of the Comité permanent du Salon international de l’Automobile Foundation of Geneva, within the scope of its competences, will in fact formally request the cantonal supervisory authority for foundations (ASFIP) for authorization to dissolve the Foundation. The GIMS Qatar event, which will be held in Doha in November 2025, has been confirmed: “For its next festival dedicated to automotive excellence, and on the heels of a successful first edition, GIMS Qatar can continue to rely on the know-how and recognized expertise of the teams that initiated and developed the concept and its implementation ”, observed Sandro Mesquita, CEO of GIMS. “It is satisfying to realize that motor shows continue to attract brands in different parts of the world and that the Geneva International Motor Show has strengthened its appeal in the Middle East”
