Gears of War: E-Day was one of the most popular (if somewhat predictable) surprises of last night’s Xbox Games Showcase. Through a post on the Xbox Wire blog, the developers of The Coalition have revealed further details of the game and among the topics touched upon there is also the technical sector, which the developers promise will offer a “an unparalleled visual experience” thanks to Unreal Engine 5 and the technologies implemented by the team.
In particular, it seems that the leap compared to Gears 5 in 2019 will be abysmal, in fact there is talk of “over 100 times more detail for environment and charactershardware raytraced lighting, reflections and shadows, next-gen destruction and gore, and cutting-edge animation technology.”
A new technical standard
“With the advancements of Unreal Engine 5, the leap in quality for the technical sector is enormous,” said Kate Rayner, studio technical director at The Coalition. “Our ambition is to once again establish a new standard of technical excellence“.
“We have completely modernized Gears from the ground up, infusing all the capabilities of modern gaming technology. Every character, environment and animation in ‘Gears of War: E-Day’ has been completely rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5, allowing us to represent the universe of Gears with unprecedented detail and fidelity“.
“The original ‘Mad World’ trailer made a real statement of intent using in-engine footage. With Unreal Engine 5 we take it even further. Our goal with the announcement trailer was to highlight our commitment to push us beyond the boundaries of storytelling and technology in games”.
The Coalition also confirmed that Gears of War: E-Day is a prequel to the first game, inevitably putting the story on hold, which will be continued in Gears 6.
