Gearbox Entertainment, the publisher of Borderlands and various other well-known titles, has acquired en bloc the label Perfect World Entertainment, which specializes primarily in MMOs, marking a further expansion of Embracer Group in the videogame field, which has now become a real colossus.
With the acquisition of Perfect World Entertainment, both the central publishing section and the team end up under the Gearbox and Embracer umbrella Cryptic Studios, which is part of the company, with a total of 237 employees involved in the transaction and a total purchase of $ 125 million in cash and stock payments. In any case, the entire Perfect World division, acquired 100%, will end up within Gearbox Entertainment, which in turn is fully controlled by the Embracer Group.
This makes Perfect World a subsidiary of Embracer but will continue to operate as a separate section, particularly with regard to the Cryptic Studios team which will continue its operations according to the organization maintained so far. Founded in 2000 in Los Gatos, California, the team in question is responsible for some famous MMO such as Neverwinter, Star Trek Online and Champions Online, which still continue to have a substantial active population through the support of a large team of 136 developers.
Perfect World Entertainment Publishing is also linked above all to the field of online RPGs, having published among others the titles of Cryptic Studios, of course, in addition to others developed by different teams such as the Torchlight series and the recent Remnant: From the Ashes, all with 101 employees inside.
During 2021, PWE recorded some operational losses also due to the cancellation of Cryptic’s new MMO, Magic: Legends, which also prompted the acquisition maneuver, which should provide greater peace of mind to operations and stability in the future.
