The Russian consortium sows alarm in Europe by pointing out that it does not know when it will be able to have the turbine retained in Canada
The alarm has jumped in the European Union after the Russian gas consortium Gazprom warned on Wednesday that it cannot guarantee a “safe operation” to resume supply from next day 21, the date on which the technical stoppage theoretically concludes by maintenance works. The reason given by the company is that it does not know when it will be able to have the turbine retained in Canada, necessary at the Portovaya compressor station to maintain the safety of the entire Nord Stream gas pipeline.
The turbine was sent to the Siemens company for repairs, but international sanctions on Russia seem to make its return difficult. Moreover, Ukraine has filed a complaint with the courts to try to keep the piece withheld, despite the fact that the Canadian government announced on Saturday its intention to return it to Germany.
āGazprom does not have a single document that allows Siemens to take the gas turbine engine out of Canada. Under these circumstances, it is not possible to draw an objective conclusion about the future development of the situation to ensure the safe operation of the Portovaya compressor station, which is a critical facility for the Nord Stream gas pipeline,” the consortium said on Wednesday. The message has fueled uncertainty in the EU, whose partners fear that, beyond a change of dates, it hides Moscow’s alleged intention to reduce supplies to Europe to generate insecurity and raise prices.
