The 18-year-old American stopped by the Tunisian n. 1 of the seeding. Switzerland beats Sakkari. Semifinals in Birmingham postponed until tomorrow due to rain. Osaka and Bouchard forfeit for Wimbledon
Nothing to do for Coco Gauff, one step away from the top 10 for the first time in her life, at 18, but who has to postpone the appointment of the entry among the ten best players in the world due to today’s defeat against the spectacular Ons Jabeur, in the semifinal of the WTA 500 tournament in Berlin, on grass. The Tunisian tennis player, seeded number 1, defeated the American, seventh seeding force, with a score of 7-6 (4) 6-2. Coco therefore reaches the best ranking of her (n.12, behind Emma Raducanu), but for only 21 points she is unable to undermine the Spanish Muguruza from the tenth world position.

The Gauff, fresh from the final of Roland Garros lost against the n.1 Iga Swiatek, will be able to do it again at Wimbledon, where she does not start as a favorite but certainly as one of the possible surprises. Jabeur, on the other hand, could really surprise on the English fields, given her game and her propensity for both clay and fast, which is now very welcome when it comes to playing at Wimbledon. The Tunisian in the final in Berlin will challenge the Swiss Belinda Bencic, who defeated the Greek Maria Sakkari in three sets.
Return to Birmingham

No semifinals instead, due to rain, in the other WTA grass tournament, the 250 scheduled in Birmingham, both postponed to Sunday. In the upper part of the board the Romanian Sorana Cirstea will challenge the Chinese Zhang Shuai, while in the lower part the Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia (who defeated our Camila Giorgi in the quarters) will face the other Romanian Simona Halep. The winners will play two games in one day in a decent tour de force. Meanwhile, Wimbledon loses two protagonists, more or less expected, depending on your point of view. Naomi Osaka and Eugenie Bouchard (finalist in London in 2014), have announced that they will not take part in the Championships, amidst a mixture of injuries and lack of interest due to the lack of points. “My Achilles tendon is still not good, so see you next time,” the former Japanese world number one said in a tweet. Her participation was already in doubt after ATP and WTA had decided to deprive Wimbledon of points in the standings after the All England Club banned Russian and Belarusian players in response to the invasion of Ukraine. The Canadian instead preferred to reserve the possibility of playing with the protected ranking (post injury) in other events that gave points, thus returning to the international circuit for the season on hard in North America.
