American Coco Gauff, seeded third, held on in the second set to win 6-2, 6-4 over Ukrainian Diana Yastremska and advance to the fourth round (round of 16) in the women’s singles competition at the French Open tennis championship at the Roland Garros clay courts in Paris.
The American player’s superiority was clear during the first set, before her level declined slightly in the second against the Ukrainian player, who, against expectations, qualified for the Australian Open semi-finals.
Gauff previously won the US Open title, also qualified for the French Open final in 2022, and won her last title on clay in 2021.
After losing the first set, Yastremska, ranked 32nd in the world, tried to hold on and rely on the power of her strong strikes and serves, but she sent a backhand ball out of the court to lose her service game early in the second set.
Gauff then succeeded in breaking her opponent’s serve again, while Yastremska tried to return, but Gauff quickly decided the set and the match after the Ukrainian competitor committed many unforced errors.
