According to members of Petrobras, the scenario is favorable for further price reductions, especially in gasoline. Monitoring international prices is part of the company’s statute, but it is common opinion within the oil company that the political influence of the government has had an impact on the frequency of transfers when electorally beneficial to President Jair Bolsonaro. Even with the international market and the dollar rate putting pressure on domestic prices, there is still an average difference of R$0.20 in the price of gasoline in Brazil in relation to the international price.
The logic of cooking gas prices is different from other fuels, and Petrobras avoids very frequent transfers, either upwards or downwards, as it is the main producer and importer. Announced on Monday (12), the reduction in cooking gas was already expected by the market, which followed a greater drop in international prices since last week.
The reduction was 4.7% in the price of LPG, which will take effect from today (13/09). As a result, the average value of gas sold to distributors will drop from R$4.23 per kilo to R$4.03. The average price of a 13 kilo cylinder will be R$ 52.34, that is, it is equivalent to a reduction of R$ 2.60, on average.
The last time the price of gas was lowered was on April 9, when there was a drop of R$ 3.27 in the final value of the cylinder. That month, the National Congress also approved a Bill that allowed the reduction of taxes on gas without the need to compensate for the loss of revenue.
The price of cylinders and fuel is at the center of the political debate because it directly affects the poorest population – and also the popularity of President Jair Bolsonaro. In addition to the tax reduction, in June Congress took advantage of the state of emergency PEC to expand the benefit. Through it, in addition to a voucher of R$ 1,000 for truck drivers to fill up their vehicles, the value of the gas voucher now includes a cylinder every two months.
