A rediscovered AlphaTauri, that of the Hungarian Friday. Or rather, the free practice of the Hungaroring returned a Pierre Gasly in dusting: the Frenchman finished fifth in the morning and sixth in the afternoon, showing great polish especially on the single lap. Worse has gone to Yuki Tsunoda, who has accumulated only 21 laps due to a mistake in PL1 which cost him part of the morning session and almost the whole afternoon. However, the Faenza team, which has brought aerodynamic updates to Hungary, expects both drivers to shine in qualifying, even if the behavior of the AT02 in cooler temperatures is to be seen, as suggested by the weather forecast (which even indicates rain at 60 % for tomorrow).
Pierre Gasly (PL1 P5, 1: 18.181 – PL2 P6, 1: 18.113): “I am very happy with how it went today, especially after Silverstone where we struggled a bit. Nice to see that we have found the performance. In these particularly hot conditions, the car performed well, so we’ll see how things go tomorrow. Alpine seems to be very fast this weekend, so tonight we will have to work hard to try to keep up in qualifying. I think that during the night, but also tomorrow morning, it could rain, so we could have different track conditions. The pace of the car looks good though, so we can look forward to tomorrow with confidence“.
Yuki Tsunoda (PL1 P12, 1: 18.770 – PL2 P17 – 1: 19.671): “I am really disappointed for today. During the first free practice I made a mistake and I missed a lot more than one session. The rear of the car was very nervous, especially in the fast corners and there I was losing a lot of time compared to Pierre. I was trying to improve in those areas, but I lost control of the car and crashed. Unfortunately, in the bump the gearbox was damaged and the team had to work hard to get the car ready for the afternoon. The mechanics did a great job of fixing everything before the end of the session so that I could do at least one lap during PL2. For the engineers it was useful, so we can review the data tonight“.
