A videogame start, in an attempt to dodge cars that arrive from all sides in the initial carom, a comeback built one lap after another and – right at the end of the race – the icing on the cake of the fast lap. The Hungarian GP of Pierre Gasly, started by the Frenchman from AlphaTauri in fifth position and finished after more than two hours in the same square, it certainly wasn’t boring. The winner of Monza 2020 at the start found himself in the midst of the confusion triggered by the mistakes of Bottas and Stroll. Thanks to a series of slalom between cars and pieces, however, the native of Rouen, despite having fallen in last position, survived without too much damage to the bumper car.
To evaluate the extent of Gasly’s departure, just think that among the riders who started from second to seventh position he was the only one not to end up with the car completely damaged after curve 1. Overtaking after overtaking then came the sixth final position, transformed by the race direction in fifth and seasoned by bonus point which is especially happy… Red Bull. Thanks to the fastest lap, gained in the last lap of the race, Gasly in fact removed a precious dot from Lewis Hamilton’s ‘chest’. A help certainly welcome to his former teammate Max Verstappen, especially in such a difficult moment of his season and in a championship so balanced and full of reversals in front of him.
P6 & Fastest Lap.
What a mess at the start. Not much to say, unlucky today. We dropped to last after the mess so good recovery after that. Congrats to Esteban & Alpine today.🇫🇷 pic.twitter.com/O0wQMvQzIu

“Honestly, I don’t know what to think. We started fifth, probably the best position we could have hoped for – Gasly said after the race – but then I was almost thrown out in the first corner crash and I had to reassemble to finish sixth. Sure, it’s a good result if we consider everything that happened in the race, but I think it could have been better today. In qualifying we were the first pursuers and I was satisfied with the car: these are positive elements that we have taken away from this weekend. However, we have lost a lot of points in the championship and this is regrettable. However, I think today we have achieved the best possible result in today’s circumstances. Congratulations to Esteban for the victory, I think they made the right strategic choice and he deserves this success“.
Final seventh place and best career result also for Yuki Tsunoda. “After the first lap I managed to jump to fifth position and I was happy. I struggled with the car all weekend – admitted the Japanese – but during the race the pace was ok and I managed to get some good points for the team. For me, this has been a really complicated weekend. Now I need to disconnect, reset my mind during the summer break and then work towards Spa on what I really need to be able to continue scoring points consistently in the second half of the season ”.
