Two weeks after the real disappointment of the Monaco Grand Prix, the team AlphaTauri is charged and intends to forget what happened in the Principality with the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, scheduled this weekend on another city track like the one in Baku. A bitterness dictated not so much by the performance of the car itself, which indeed seemed very promising right from the free practice sessions, but by the outcome of qualifying, decisive for a race almost always without overtaking on the track like the Monegasque one. A series of errors that proved fatal especially a Pierre Gaslyeven eliminated immediately in Q1 and sentenced to a race in the rear, then closed with a good 11th place.
The Frenchman is therefore determined to dismiss the blow he suffered in Monaco on the circuit of Bakuwhere instead it keeps good memories thanks to 3rd place conquered in 2021, when he came behind an even more surprising Sebastian Vettel with Aston Martin: “I have good feelings about this race, because the Baku track is made up only of slow corners and we know that, so far, we seem to struggle more in the high speed corners – explained Gasly – so I think the track may be suitable for us. We must not forget that there is the long main straight, so we will have to see how we tackle it. Overall, though, I am reasonably optimistic that we will be able to achieve good results. Last year we did very well here, as I got on the podium after qualifying 4th, and it was an excellent race for the team as Yuki also scored points in 7th place. So, we come to Baku to ‘defend’ that result. Getting the trail on the long final straight would be useful for qualifying – he concluded – but apart from that, it is another street circuit, very tortuous and narrow with characteristics similar to those of Monaco ”.
Optimism and positivity also shared by the teammate of the transalpine, Yuki Tsunoda, fresh from a weekend that developed on the contrary to the number 10 of the house in Faenza. In the Principality, in fact, the Japanese was the architect of a good qualifying, which almost turned into a pass in Q3, only to finish the race in 17th and last position: “Now let’s go to Baku, which last year was a really good race for us – Tsunoda added – I qualified 8th and was 5th in the race, until I lost a couple of positions in the final moments after the red flag. There are not many negatives either I don’t like parts of Baku. I particularly like sector 2, where you pass by old buildings, and there are many overtaking opportunities not only on the very long straight, so in general I like it. I hope the race week is clean and points can be scored. The team needs a positive weekend, putting everything together to get the best possible result. We don’t have to repeat what happened in Munich“.
