Despite a 2021 season as a great protagonist, Pierre Gasly should not be able to return to Red Bull next year as the Milton Keynes team is expected to confirm Sergio Perez alongside Max Verstappen for 2022.
Gasly will therefore continue with AlphaTauri, the team of which he is now the leader, but after a chat with Helmut Marko, the Frenchman said he was confident about the future of the Faenza-based team.
“We talked in Austria over lunch and we discussed a lot of things. It was good to understand a little more about their vision and their future plans considering that I still have a few years of contract with Red Bull ”.
“We will see what happens in the future, but they are very happy with my performance and the contribution I am giving to the team. What I need is to stay focused without worrying about what’s going to happen. In any case it was a good discussion ”.
Yesterday, on the Silverstone track, the prototype of the ground-effect F1 car was unveiled, which will be deployed on the track next year. Gasly said he was certain that the regulatory change could provide AlphaTauri with the assistance to progress in the standings, even if he did not underestimate the risks of completely wrong project.
“Anything can happen. If we find something special on the car that works correctly, we could also have better results than we have achieved this year, but at the same time there is a risk of making mistakes ”.
“It will start from a blank sheet and you can take various directions. There are a lot of unknowns for 2022 and I don’t think at the moment anyone knows who the reference team will be ”.
“Obviously I am sure that the top teams, thanks to the structures and staff, will have more opportunities to do well, but nothing is guaranteed and not excluded that next year there may be surprises”.
