“The signs point to deliberate action, sabotage,” Defense Minister Antti Kaikkonen said.

Government tells his initial assessment of the Baltic Sea gas pipeline leak at a press conference that starts at 8 p.m.

HS will show the event live in conjunction with this article.

Minister of Defense Antti Kaikkonen (central) briefly commented on the situation earlier on Wednesday. According to Kaikkonen, it is clear that gas pipes “do not explode by themselves”.

“The signs point to deliberate action, sabotage,” he said.

from Russia In the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines running to Germany at the bottom of the Baltic Sea, large leaks were detected in both of them at the beginning of the week near the Danish island of Bornholm.

The pipes were full of natural gas, although no gas has been delivered to Europe from them recently. Gas has been seen bubbling to the surface over large areas.

The seismological data indicating an underwater explosion and the general assessment of the resistance of the pipes strongly suggest that the pipes were broken on purpose.

Kaikkonen stated that despite its seriousness, the event does not pose a military threat to Finland.

The government holds a press conference after its so-called evening school. At the meeting, the ministers had the opportunity to get more information about what happened from the authorities and to discuss possible reactions to the tightening of the security situation in the Baltic Sea.

President Sauli Niinistö assessed to HS earlier today that the security threat experienced by Europe has “raised to a new level” with the suspicion of sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines.
