Danish authorities on Monday told ships to keep a radius of five nautical miles from an area off the island of Bornholm after a gas leak overnight from the Russian-owned Nord Stream 2 pipeline in the Baltic Sea.
The German government said it was in contact with Danish authorities and was working with local law enforcement to find out why the pressure in the pipeline suddenly dropped. The Danish Energy Ministry declined to comment.
The pipeline has been one of the hot spots in the escalating energy war between Europe and Moscow since the Russian attack on Ukraine in February, which hit major Western economies and sent gas prices soaring.
“Today a leak occurred in the Nord Stream 2 pipeline in the Danish region,” the Danish Energy Agency said in a statement.
She added that the Danish maritime authorities issued a navigational warning and imposed a cordon around the pipeline, as the leak “poses a threat to the movement of ships.”
The company responsible for Nord Stream 2 reported that the pressure in the pipeline, which had some airtight gas inside although not turned on, dropped from 105 to seven bars overnight.
