Governor of SP said he represents the “root of São Paulo” and maintains dialogue with opponent Márcio França (PSB)
The governor of São Paulo and pre-candidate for reelection, Rodrigo Garcia (PSDB), said on Monday night (4.Jul.2022) that he does not criticize opponent Tarcício de Freitas (Republicans) for being from Rio de Janeiro. He made the statement in an interview with the program Live Wheelgives TV Cultura.
“I didn’t talk in my networks about him being from Rio. I defend the root paulista, which is not who was born in São Paulo. It is who lived, who lives in São Paulo, who helped us to build this State. In my opinion, the secret of São Paulo’s economic success lies in diversity. […] So, the root paulista represents this. A state of mind”said.
Garcia also stated that he maintains dialogue with the former governor Márcio França (PSB). According to a Datafolha survey released on Thursday (June 30), in a scenario without France at Palácio dos Bandeirantes, the toucan appears in 2nd, tied with Freitas – both with 13%. At the top appears Fernando Haddad (EN) with 34%.
“Dialogue with him [Márcio França], who has been a deputy for a long time in São Paulo. The press says he apparently made the decision to run for the Senate on Haddad’s ticket. […] The best search is on the 2nd of October”declared.
Public spending
The governor of SP stated that Brazil “there will be a high price to pay” on the increase in public spending: “I say that, regardless of who the president is in 2023, Brazil’s fiscal situation is worse than this year.”
Garcia referred to the matter when he spoke about the PEC das Bondades, which recognizes a state of emergency to authorize the government to create and expand social programs in an election year.
Taxes
Garcia also criticized federal taxes collected in São Paulo. For him, it will be necessary to review the federative pact from 2023.
“It is unthinkable for us to maintain this amount of poorly distributed taxes that Brazil has, concentrating more than 60% in the federal government, 20 to 25% in the states and 15% in the municipalities”said.
“A lot of the money we raise in São Paulo is going to other states. Obviously we are a federated entity and we must support other states, but São Paulo, which is the locomotive of this country, cannot be the workhorse of the country”he said.
Abortion
When asked about abortion, Rodrigo Garcia said that his defense is “by current legislation”.
“We cannot, due to a mistake made by the magistrate, think that the legislation is not good”, declared.
Campaign
The governor of São Paulo stated that the state secretary for Economic Development, Zeina Latif, will be the coordinator of his government program. Rodrigo Garcia also said that he did not have “political godfather” and criticized the national polarization between the former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (EN) and the current one, Jair Bolsonaro (PL): “I am a 3rd way candidate”.
He declared, however, that he will have no difficulty in dialoguing with the president-elect: “I won’t have any difficulty, being re-elected, to sit with whoever sits in the president’s chair. This is my role” .
