President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum said that the accusations made by Genaro García Luna, who was detained in the United States, about alleged links to drug trafficking by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and his operators are false.
In an interview after holding a meeting with his next Security Cabinet, he considered that it is a “political issue” to “smear” the outgoing President, since he has never had any relationship with any criminal.
“It’s false, it’s a political issue, the President has never been involved in anything that has to do with any criminal. So it’s absolutely false,” Sheinbaum stressed. He says there are videos, the next President was questioned outside the transition house.
“It’s false, it’s false, it’s absolutely false. I know President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the people of Mexico know him; if he didn’t have moral authority, the moral authority that he has, he couldn’t have made the transformation that he made,” he responded.
In a public letter released on Monday, the former Secretary of Public Security, found guilty of drug trafficking in 2023 in the United States, accused López Obrador of the same crime. He also defended his innocence and accused the federal government of fabricating evidence against him. What motivation could García Luna have had to involve him at this point? Sheinbaum was asked. “No, because it is a political issue, the President is leaving, García Luna wants, I suppose, to stain him, but he will not be able to,” she said. On another topic, Sheinbaum confirmed that this afternoon she met with the Secretary of the Interior, Luisa María Alcalde, to talk about some “pending issues” of the judicial reform.
