It is interesting to note that i narrative role-playing games still have a lot to tell in 2021. Will their multifaceted nature broaden their general expressive possibilities, or simply a particular attachment on the part of both the public and the various creatives? The words as the primary means of creating a vast and complex world. This is actually the basis of every single story ever created or built in any medium, only here the “Know how to write” it reaches an even more central level and importance. All this to frame some playful experiences that still manage today, even in theirs classicism, to completely absorb those who venture into it, contributing to a structure that is undoubtedly always fascinating in its appearance. Gamedec, the title of which we propose ours today review, is based precisely on all this, on these specific expressive possibilities, merged with an always coherent artistic sector.
The world of video games and his progression towards new figurative heights is undoubtedly fascinating, especially considering the steps forward made in terms of hardware and consoles, all accompanied by an expansion towards roads never explored before. In this they go to embed products like this, products that do not aim too much at visual power, turning its potential towards “experiences” who want to make their mark. Here the characterization general is the master, in worlds inlaid with details and characters who want to be outlined as much as possible with the vision of the player too. A principle of impersonation therefore, in which, following access, everything falls into the hands of those who are playing, of those who take their steps within the various events. Two paths, that of reality and that of fiction that go hand in hand, merging together in the purest subjectivism ready to give something more.
A world in ruins and a complex palliative
Let’s open this Gamedec review by talking about the his world. This from the very first moments of the plot is enough complicated, but still interesting. The inspiration behind its meanders comes from a series of novels, published in 2004, signed by Marcin Sergiusz Przybyłek. Everything takes place in this extremely futuristic Warsaw where citizens have found refuge. The greatest dangers, in fact, lie outside the city and are represented by the uncontaminated and wild nature. Since the human being has not managed in any way to respond to this so aggressive flora, he has closed himself within the walls of a context that is very reminiscent of products such as Blade Runner in its aesthetics. The terror of the external situation was obviously replaced by monotony, buffered through a sort of virtual equivalent of life called Virtualia. This set of online situations brings together the entire population of the city, and given the complexity of the structure and its hyperrealism, all kinds of problems have arisen.
THE cheater are one of them, accompanied by glitch And bug of sorts, only that in virtual reality they have an extremely different impact on the various users, more direct, even causing real pain. To stem all this, some special figures have been created, the so-called Gamedec. Their role is to intervene, investigating these problematic situations and trying to stem them as much as possible impact that could affect the people involved in the real world. The boys of Anshar Studios they then fused the literary dynamics of these stories into an experience that is modeled around a single protagonist. On his shoulders the task of introducing the game world and the various dynamics that exist between the different narrative elements. Gamedec puts a lot of things into the player’s hands through its own writing, recalling other titles of the same mold, and in fact we have already addressed all this also in the review of Disc Elysium, to name one.
A familiar feeling
From the point there is of gameplay, Gamedec arises in an extremely way classical. It is simply a narrative RPG, developed along the various lines of dialogue to interpose between the protagonist and his world. Some descriptive, therefore, and others socio-communicative. The very first thing you will have to do to start your own adventure will be that of outline our / our protagonist. The selection menu offers various models to choose from, actually not too different from each other, nor particularly varied. It will be possible to select the gender, the name, the geographical and social origin. The menu in question is extremely simple and straightforward, particularly poor man from the point of view of aesthetic characterization. Once you have outlined your digital alter-ego at a minimum, you will be launched into the various events.
Our main task will be to conduct some investigations in relation to the various problems that the narration will propose to us. During these they can be entertained relations of various kinds with the other characters of the story. These will lead to a specific growth of our character, developing both his character traits and his dialectal skills. It all happens through a tree from the “Professions” in which to move their own developments.
Each dialogue present within Gamedec, as you will also read later in the review, has a weight particular on everything that will happen later. The multiple choices that will reveal themselves on your path represent the central focus of your adventure and based on these you will get some specific developments for your character who will inevitably go to exclude them of the others. By choosing the path of crime, for example, you will have special bonuses that will make you come into contact with specific characters and places, excluding others. Everything is in your hands and how you decide to conduct your story. Such an approach obviously rewards the replayability of the entire title, pushing from time to time to start new games, with the aim of snooping towards all the other avenues available.
Speaking of the general structure, this Gamedec always tries to enrich and contextualize through a Codex which will come in extremely useful in some situations. The general care of his lines undoubtedly embellishes the game world, which always results thorough, in a certain way, but also enhanced and distinguished from other products of the same kind. Of course, this is not a fast video game at all, but on the contrary an adventure that takes its time and space, almost entirely tracing the protagonist who is developing. These could certainly be points against him, but buffered by a general care that undoubtedly captures from the beginning. The weight of one’s actions always makes itself felt, as well as the “Gravitas” of what happens around us.
A world in constant motion
In a review by Gamedec it is also central to talk about his artistic rendering, of the way the game world is drawn step by step. As mentioned above, the style that shapes the game world is the Cyberpunk (albeit with some digression and experimentalism), accompanied by a general attention that is credible from start to finish. Just look at the small ones details visuals to compose the various places that can be visited. First of all, the protagonist’s apartment, also enriched by the objects with which you can interact. The view is always isometric el‘Unreal Engine 4 he does his job well, outlining an experience that appears well cared for, setting up a silent but at the same time enveloping dialogue in some of its situations. Certainly the English language could represent a great communication obstacle for many, as well as a general limitation in the interaction with a story that wants, in any case, to be read.
