November has now come to an end and before venturing into what will be the releases of the last month of 2021 it is time to determine which title will win the title of Game of the Month for us of Akiba Gamers. November saw the arrival of some truly divisive titles like Pokémon Shining Diamond And Shining Pearl Pokémon, a fourth generation remake duo that really managed to break the opinion of critics and audiences, or BLUE REFLECTION: Second Light, a sequel to the franchise created by KOEI TECMO GAMES in 2017. But of all the titles released in November the game that we most awaited and that gave us the most satisfaction was without a shadow of a doubt Shin Megami Tensei V, fifth chapter of the famous saga ATLUS known for its punitive difficulty and for a narrative with existential and dark themes.
Exclusive to Nintendo Switch, the title was unveiled in 2017 precisely in conjunction with the launch of the console thus underlining the partnership between the two companies for the distribution of the franchise. In fact, starting from 2009 the main chapters of Shin Megami Tensei are exclusive to Nintendo consoles, with the exception of the remastered in high definition of the third chapter and the title for smartphones Shin Megami Tensei: Liberation Dx2. But let’s take a dip in the past, it was in fact 1987 when Japan saw the light Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei, a franchise based on the sci-fi novels written by the Japanese author Aya Nishitani. Over the years the series has not only managed to find one’s own identity by detaching oneself from Nishitani-san’s stories, but it even spawned several spin-offs first of all the celebrated Person.
In Shin Megami Tensei V we will find all those elements that made the franchise famous, including the presence of a difficulty curve that from the early stages of the game will prove to be really punitive. The system of weaknesses present in the game means that every mistake can prove to be fatal, and we will have to constantly modify our team based on the enemies we will have to face. The composition of the party will therefore play a central role within the game and thanks to the presence of over two hundred between demons and divinities that we can convince to join our team, the possibilities to create a unique team that fits our play style are truly endless. Even the protagonist, the Nahobino, can be customized to our liking thanks to the possibility of infuse it with the powers of demons in order to change his weaknesses and abilities to use in battle.
Technically unfortunately Shin Megami Tensei V suffers a little from the limitations imposed by the Nintendo Switch hardware. If on the one hand we find an excellent character design and an impactful artistic direction on the other we will have to keep ourselves ready for a dancer frame rate, sometimes annoying light effects and other small flaws which make the gaming experience a little more frustrating than we might have expected. Nevertheless the sound sector is truly stunning, and the main plot manages to immerse us in existential questions by placing the player at the center of a power struggle to decide the future of humanity.

Ultimately, the shortcomings in terms of graphics are compensated for by a respectable gameplay and by a remaining well-kept and interesting technical sector, which have managed to keep us glued to the screen for tens of hours. For these reasons Shin Megami Tensei V wins the November Game of the Month title, and who knows that he may not even manage to win the victory as “Best RPG of 2021“In the course of The Game Awards 2021, which will be held on December 9th.
