Through its official X page, the magazine of video game Game Informer shared that after 33 years it was closing for good. This post was accompanied by a message that talks about what a great experience it was. However, controversy arose because the closure was so sudden that not even employees were notified.
According to several sources close to the situation, Game Informer employees were unaware that the magazine was closing. In fact, several of them were fired just an hour before the farewell post reached social media. This has already caused a lot of disdain towards GameStop, the owners of the magazine. As if the lack of notification to employees was not enough, accusations arose that the farewell announcement was made with an AI.
A quick look at their social media profiles reveals that there was indeed no indication that the publication had been shut down. In recent days they even published previews of some upcoming games and invited their readers to stay tuned for full reviews. These words make it clear that the editors were not aware of this.

Game Informer’s chief content officer and head of video also spoke to X to discuss the closure. According to the content director, they already had the following number at 70%. While the video editor assured that everyone was fired unexpectedly. What a way to close a great legacy.
What was Game Informer?
Game Informer was a video game magazine owned by GameStop. At its peak, it sold up to 8 million copies. However, with the arrival of the pandemic and the proliferation of digital games, both the magazine and its parent company suffered a decline in sales.
They still seemed somewhat healthy and continued to put out plenty of content on their various platforms. Evidently GameStop no longer saw it as profitable and decided to put an end to it abruptly on August 2. We’ll see what happens next with this situation and what will happen to his former employees.
