The opposition presidential candidate This Saturday, Xóchitl Gálvez accused his rival, the ruling party Claudia Sheinbaum, of lying about the drop in femicides during his mandate in Mexico City after the capture of an alleged serial killer who would have killed about 20 women.
“The truth always comes to light. Claudia lies saying that she fought femicides and the State machinery operates to hide reality from Mexicans,” Gálvez indicated in his X account.
Their statements come after the accusation on Friday against Miguel Cortésa chemist by profession and theater actor arrested on Tuesday for allegedly raping and killing a minor named Maria José, in addition to injuring the mother with a knife after she discovered the murder.
When inspecting his home, the authorities of Mexico City, which Sheinbaum governed from 2018 to 2023, discovered bones, blood and evidence that he murdered more women in Iztacalco, an internal district of the capital.
Gálvez, from the Frente y Corazón por México coalition, commented that “It is worrying that this case has come to light not because of an investigation by the authorities but because of the intervention of neighbors who bravely helped a mother try to save her daughter.”
“After the arrest of the Iztacalco serial killer, we learned that there may be up to 20 victims, including women, who disappeared and the authority did not search during his administration in CDMX,” he stated.
The Controversy grows because during the first presidential debate, on April 7, Sheinbaum asserted that during his mandate in the capital, femicides fell by 40% and there was “zero impunity.”
Surveys agree that insecurity is the biggest concern of voters ahead of the June 2 elections in Mexico, where an average of 10 women are murdered a day, according to official figures.
“Claudia lies saying that 100% of the femicides were punished. My solidarity with the families of the victims who faced abandonment by the government that preferred to hide the figures to campaign instead of seeking justice for them,” Gálvez concluded.
