According to Plínio Valério (PSDB-AM), the government does not have the votes to block the proposal for financial and budgetary autonomy of the monetary authority in the CCJ
The rapporteur of the PEC (Proposed Amendment to the Constitution) 65 of 2023, senator Plínio Valério (PSDB-AM), stated to Power360 than Gabriel Galípolo, approved unanimously in CAE (Economic Affairs Committee) this Tuesday (October 8, 2024) for the presidency of the BC, is in favor of the proposal that grants financial and budgetary autonomy to the BC (Central Bank).
To this digital newspaper, the congressman stated that the government does not have the votes to block the PEC in the CCJ (Constitution and Justice Commission), where it is stuck after several successful attempts by the Government leader in the Upper House, Jacques Wagner (PT-BA), to postpone the vote.
According to the Power360the government is ensuring that the proposal is not approved before the departure of Roberto Campos Neto from the Presidency of the BC –his term ends on December 31, 2024. The idea is that Campos Neto, who worked behind the scenes for the PEC, does not leave office with the legacy of approving the text.
If the PEC is approved, the BC, which is currently funded by the OAM (Monetary Authority Budget) and the Union, will be able to use seigniorage recipes –the gains obtained from the issuance of currency– to finance its expenses.
