It’s 5:30 in the morning when I wake up. I hear my son still living at home and working (because well, no living space to be found) stumbling downstairs and out the door. When he comes back an hour and a half later, I ask him why he was up so early. Turns out his girlfriend called him. There were no trains and she had an early shift, so if he could take her to the hospital.
I compliment him on this caring attitude: “Truly a gallant lifesaver.”
To which he answers wearily: “No, a sucker with a car.”
