Briatore at work
The presence of Flavio Briatore in Bahrain for the opening of the 2024 Formula 1 season has obviously not gone unnoticed. The Italian manager is at home in the Circus paddock, also due to his role as ambassador acquired within the management of Stefano Domenicali. Obviously, however, the media attention towards the former Renault team principal is linked to his role as manager of Fernando Alonso.
The Asturian champion doesn't seem to have any intention of hanging up his helmet, despite turning 43 at the end of July. The #14 Aston Martin is in though contract expires at the end of this year and is looking around to try to understand – in case he really decides to continue his adventure in F1 – in which stable to settle in. On several occasions the two-time world champion has expressed words of loyalty towards his current team, indicating it as his first choice for 2025.
Eyes on Mercedes, but how many candidates
However, it is not lost on anyone that the seat left vacant in Mercedes by Lewis Hamilton for next year may it make Alonso's mouth water. The former Ferrari driver is inside one shortlist of potential candidates for post-Hamilton. Initially it seemed that his only opponent might be the very young man Andrea Kimi Antonellia very interesting prospect from the Mercedes Academy which made its debut in F2 this year.
Recently, however, the list has also been expanded to include surprise names from Sebastian Vettel And Max Verstappen. Briatore didn't go too far in Bahrain, reiterating that “We are working and looking for the best future option for Fernando“. The waltz of negotiations has begun and the Piedmontese manager certainly has the right connections to guarantee Alonso interesting opportunities.
