While fuel prices in Germany continue to rise, gasoline and diesel remain cheap in the Czech Republic. Many Germans therefore go to the neighboring country to refuel.
Prague – To the Petrol stations in Germany, diesel is more expensive than ever. Petrol is also approaching a peak, as the ADAC announced on Monday (October 18, 2021). According to the Federal Statistical Office, consumer prices are also continuing to rise. That’s why many Germans go to the Czech Republic to refuel – some of the fuel there is 44 cents cheaper than in Germany.
The rise in the price of oil is primarily to blame for the rising fuel prices. This has been increasing since the break-in at the beginning of the corona* Pandemic again. Then there is the typical autumn high demand for heating oil*. And since the beginning of the year, the carbon dioxide price of 25 euros per ton has resulted in an additional price premium of around 6 to 8 cents per liter. This is reported by the German Press Agency (dpa). Experts now fear that in addition to fuel, electricity and oil, gas will also become more expensive.
Cheap paradise in the Czech Republic: Germans save 43.9 cents per liter of fuel
In the Czech Republic, on the other hand, the gasoline price level remains stable. Many Germans therefore used the weekend to take a trip to the cheap paradise. For comparison: While the liter super was on sale in Dresden (Saxony) for 1.779 euros, according to information from Bild in Chlumec in the Czech Republic it cost only 1.34 euros. This corresponds to a price difference of 43.9 cents per liter. And that even though the two filling stations are only 40 kilometers apart. If you fill up, you can save a lot in the Czech Republic.

Many drivers from Germany even brought canisters with them in order to benefit from the low petrol prices later on. According to the picture, there were sometimes very long queues at the gas stations. At a petrol station in Chlumec, for example, you had to wait 40 minutes for the tank to be filled up. And that although eleven gas pumps could be used.
Fuel: Not only the gas stations in the Czech Republic benefit from the onslaught – restaurants and shops too
But not only the gas stations in the Czech Republic benefit from the high prices in Germany. The shops and restaurants have also been well frequented in recent weeks due to tank tourism. Many Germans use the tank trip to the Czech Republic for a day trip with a shopping tour and lunch.
In Germany, the rise in fuel prices has recently sparked political debates. Among other things, Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer (CSU) recently called for effective countermeasures in the event that energy and fuel prices continue to rise sharply. A large part of the fuel price at the pump is made up of taxes and duties. For diesel, at the current price level, this is around 25 cents VAT, a good 47 cents mineral oil tax and 6 to 8 cents from the carbon dioxide price. The state must intervene here.
