Thousands of volunteers have returned this Saturday to the municipalities most affected by the DANA in Valencia to help in the distribution of food or in cleaning the homes and streets flooded by the flood.
On some roads at ground zero, belongings continue to pile up and are still covered in mud eleven days after a tragedy that left more than two hundred dead and dozens missing. In that sense, volunteer access has been restricted to some specific points so as not to interfere with the work that needs to be carried out by heavy machinery.
In this context of fed up with the management that the Generalitat Valenciana has made of this historical catastrophe, more than fifty social groups have called this afternoon – at 6 p.m. – a march that – under the motto ‘Mazón resignation’– will demand political responsibilities from the regional government and its president in the streets of the center of Valencia.
In statements to the mediathe popular baron has defended that the right to demonstrate is “a constitutional right”, although he has pointed out that the protest “comes with some political call.” “Political responsibilities will come at a time,” said Carlos Mazón. “Now it is about rebuilding.”
The demonstration, which has also been called in Alicante and Elche, will begin in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento and end in Manises, in front of the Palau de la Generalitat. It will be a mobilization “silent”in respect for the victims, which will help detect those who seek to take advantage of “the chaos and pain,” according to the organizers, who anticipate massive attendance from all over the province.
The walkway that connects the city of Turia with the district of La Torre and other towns hit by the storm, already renamed ‘Solidarity Bridge’will also be used for volunteers who have walked to ground zero to make their way back to the center.
Many are expected to put down their shovels and brooms and throw off their boots, masks and gloves to join the protest. “Those who have been here helping know that at six in the afternoon, which is when it gets dark, everything is over and it is time to go home to rest,” explain the organizers.
For example, the Kol·lectius Parke Coordinator of the Parque Alcosa neighborhood, in Alfafar, is organizing a column on foot towards the Plaza del Ayuntamiento of Valencia at four in the afternoon. They have also planned buses for people with mobility difficulties.
Among the entities and unions that promote this march are Cultural Action of the Valencian Country, Amical de Mauthausen, Arran-SEPC-COS, Endavant, Arrels del Canvi, Assemblea de Barri de Montolivet, BEA, Benicalap Viu, Ca Bassot, Ca Revolta, CNT València, Comissió Ciutat-Port, Coordinadora Associacions Memòria Democràtica País Valencià, Decidim- Platform for the right to decide of the Valencian Country, Entrebarris, Escola Valenciana, FAMPA València, Intersindical Valenciana, Joves d’ACPV, JovesxRussafa, LAMBDA, Plataforma 14 d’abril per la República, Societat Coral El Micalet, Teixint Patraix and Associació Cultural És País Valencia.
Regarding political parties, We can and we commit They have encouraged people to join the demonstration, although this last group has not used the same poster – with a photo of Carlos Mazón upside down – spread throughout the week on social networks and has designed its own. In it they also focus on taking to the streets so that the Government of Pedro Sánchez “cannot continue to hide” in the face of this situation.
From Nuevas Generaciones, the PP youth organization, they have criticized the call for this protest by “ultra left-wing groups” coordinated by Acció Cultural del País Valencià, “main entity of pan-Catalanism and Catalan independence in Valencia.”
