Podcast seriesdrink some more coffee, lingo watch and then cycle to the weekly card evening. That was the intention of Henk Gerritsen on Monday evening March 30, 1998. But he left his farm near Apeldoorn in a hearse, with three bullets in his chest.
The podcast ‘The murder of the Pigeon milker’ on this site sheds new light on the case. ,,It is a case that I have never forgotten,’ says Henk Bril. He is now the director of GGD Gelderland-Midden, but in 1998 he was the leader of the murder investigation. ,,I always had the hope that one day someone in the pigeon world would talk.”

In the six-part podcast series ‘The Murder of the Pigeon Fancier’ it unravels step by step what may have happened that Monday evening. The search begins in the local pigeon club and ends in a shady network that includes criminals with a solid criminal past.
The 65-year-old Gerritsen from Wenum Wiesel, just above Apeldoorn, was a pigeon fancier in heart and soul. A large-scale fraud case in the pigeon sport was personally brought to light by Gerritsen. Wanting to keep the sport clean, he discovered that two brothers who had won prize money from all competitions in the country for years were cheating with their clocks.

the murder
On Monday evening, March 30, the evening of the murder, neighbor Theo Meuleman becomes restless when Henk is late for the weekly card appointment. He calls Kees, a friend who lives with Gerritsen and asks him to take a look. He sees his roommate lying dead on the floor in the bedroom. When the doctor arrives after two hours, they turn Gerritsen around and are surprised to see three bullet holes in his chest.
That same evening, the police assemble a large team and immediately start questioning people from Gerritsen’s immediate surroundings. At least five hundred people are heard, the police put in thousands of man-hours. Suspects are arrested and released. In 2012 and 2017, the public’s help is again sought, but to no avail.
‘Police grope in world of unknown persons’, headlines daily the Stentor in the weeks following the murder. And that’s how it feels during the making of the six-part podcast series ‘de Moord op de Duivenmelker’. A world of unknown persons. From older men who are so passionate about their sport that jealousy, selfishness, betrayal and envy prevail. Or as Gerritsen put it in an interview just before his death: ,,The whole thing surrounding the sport, the fringe events, that sometimes pisses me off.”
