Luca Marini, Marco Bezzecchi and Celestino Vietti got on board Umberto Scandola’s car at the Riders meet Rally 2 event organized by WithU: “Incredible performance and guaranteed fun”. Here’s how it went
Holidays yes, but not too much: the riders of the VR46 Academy, waiting for the next MotoGP race at the Red Bull Ring, got on board the i20 R5 of the Hyundai Italia Team, on the occasion of the Riders meet Rally 2 event. planets of the two and four wheels WithU – partner of Team Petronas (the absentee of the day is Franco Morbidelli, struggling with physical recovery following the knee operation), of the VR46 Academy and Hyundai Italia will take care of it. A day full of motorsport and fun, with the public who participated in the event from the early hours of the morning both at the headquarters in Erbezzo (VR) and along the 2.5 km special stage.
The words of Luca Marini
The number 10 of the premier class of the World Championship comments on his return to a rally car, which is not as simple as driving a normal car: “I have to be honest, I got into the car and I didn’t even remember how to get crazy. ”Attacks Luca Marini. “I had to mentally reset and have it re-explain all over again, I didn’t remember all the buttons and functions from last year at Il Ciocco, on the occasion of the first edition of this event”. Marini then makes a comparison between the two and the four wheels: “They are similar in the emotions they convey and in the precision they manage to give you when cornering, but the feeling of protection is something that you inevitably don’t have on motorcycles. Here, however, with roll-bars, five-point belts and various protections you feel much more protected“. MotoGP will be back in the spotlight on the weekend of 8 August at the Red Bull Ring for the Styrian Grand Prix: “I am quite satisfied with my first part of the season: in some races I could have done better, of course, but for the second part of the championship I point to do even better. Vale and I on the same team in 2022 as suggested by the Saudi prince? It would be a dream, but I honestly don’t know what my brother’s intentions are ”.
Riders meet Rally 2: Bezzecchi
Before getting into the car for the morning test, Marco Bezzecchi, third in the Moto2 World Championship, said he was “nervous and tense to drive such powerful cars on such a narrow path. We did a reconnaissance tour along the way and it is something scary to think of passing between houses, walls and cliffs. Rally is a truly fascinating discipline ”.
Great emotion for Vietti
The mood has changed: Celestino Vietti, who during the first edition of Riders Meet Rally, at Il Ciocco in 2020, had touched a wall, entered the special stage more cautiously, gaining confidence with the car little by little. “We were lucky enough to ride a lot more than last year and this allowed me to have a progressive approach at the wheel, while at Il Ciocco – either because of the inexperience on a vehicle of this type, or because of the enthusiasm to go fast right away – I made a small mistake. In any case it is a unique fun to drive these cars, they go very fast ”. The Italian then focuses on the current season: “I’m gaining experience in Moto2, for the second part of the season I’d like to do some Top5”.
On board a rally car
At the end of the rounds reserved for the MotoGP riders, we too boarded the i20 R5 (1.6-liter turbo engine with approximately 280 HP). As a passenger, of course. At the wheel of the local idol Umberto Scandola and Hyundai Italia driver, who gave crossings and spectacle to the large audience during the special stage. The sensations on board are something that is difficult to describe: a mix of emotions and tension that only once the PS is finished does one have the clarity to analyze. Trusting Scandola with your eyes closed is the starting point, then a succession of left and right to be tackled at speeds not remotely imaginable for those who have never boarded a rally car, with the first stretch from second / third gear, a hairpin where you can “brush” using the handbrake and give spectacle to the public and then the very rhythmic second part where you reach 140 km / h of speed. All along the 2.5 km of road closed to traffic, a little wider than the car. At this point we do not even imagine what feeling the Wrc Plus are able to convey …
