The Ukrainian firm Indposhiv Casual has made Masi Nayem the hero of a new campaign that shows the horror of war
From mutilated soldier to model. Ukrainian fashion brand Indposhiv Casual has made 41-year-old Masi Nayem the hero of a new campaign showcasing the horror of war. The founder of the firm, Katerina Vozianova, explains that with this step the company wanted to define itself not only as clothing for self-made men, but also for those who “have led our homeland to victory.”
A lawyer and veteran of the anti-terrorist operation in Donbas, Nayem has been fighting on the front lines since April 17 due to the Russian invasion. Two months later, on June 5, he was severely injured in the head and fell into a coma. The next day he underwent surgery and came to his senses, but lost an eye. “Now I know how much my eye weighs, because I lost ten kilos that day,” he says today with humor. His incident could have plunged him into a black hole, but he decided to move on. And the courage has paid off. Now, it is the face of heroism.
Nayem is “grateful” for the invitation from the fashion house, although “I won’t be more handsome anyway,” he says. “I really like how children react to the absence of an eye. They come with sincerity and say ‘Look, he’s a pirate’ ».
“Dying for freedom”
“Are you ready to die for freedom?” This is the question Nayem was asking himself in the face of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This Afghan left Kabul at the age of 6 with his family due to the lack of something very important to him: freedom. “It’s not just the quality of life in a free country. It is consciousness, choice and action. And a fight for the will of others », he declares. Ukraine was his destination, where freedom is citizens’ “choice and way of life”.
