Klaus and Xynthia may be names that no longer sound like anything. But they are the names of two of those great storms that, in 2009 and 2010, caused destruction and fatalities in Spain and other European countries. Were “baptized” episodes by the University of Berlin, an entity that did it from 1954 to 2017.
Since then and through an agreement between the weather services of Spain, France, Portugal, Belgium and Luxembourg, the names of the great storms decide, respectively, respectively, Aemet, Mateteo-France, Ipma, RMI and Meteolux. But it is not the only novelty regarding what he did, until now, the University of Berlin. Although the end is the same.
Until now, all kinds of storms were “baptized” or, rather, they were named regardless of their severity or intensity. However, already root of the agreement between the mentioned entities, now in Europe Only the storms are called that they can potentially produce a great impact on goods and people.
Facilitate prevention
The intention of this agreement is to cause the best possible cooperation between National Meteorological and Hydrological Services of Europe to, logically, try to reduce the possible impact of bad weather about material goods and, above all, about the people of the populations suffering from the storms.
Putting a name, says the experts in meteorology, facilitates prevention. When a whole population repeats the name of a storm that is yet to come, it is easier to prevent and take the relevant measures, both at the level of the citizens themselves and at the level of institutions, entities and schools, for example. Hence, it is tried that the name of each storm reaches the largest number of mediawhich can make speaker of those technicians who have more authority when talking about time.
The next names
The weather services of Spain, France, Portugal Belgium and Luxembourg (southwest) do not act for free regarding their European neighbors, but coordinate with the other zonal groups, that is: with the west group (United Kingdom, Ireland and the Netherlands), north (Norway, Sweden and Denmark), central (Germany, Austria, Austria, Switzerland, Switzer Slovakia and Hungary), Central Mediterranean (Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia del Norte, Montenegro and Malta) and Eastern Mediterranean (Greece, Cyprus and Israel).
The current storm, Laurence, seems to have the hours counted because it is about to be “dismissed” by Martinho, which could arrive on Thursday. The names of the following storms are already determined and, when new and strong episodes of rain, wind, cold or snow arrive, these will be their names: Nuria, Olivier, Pauline, Rudiger, Salma, Timothee, Vanda and Wolfgang.
