What could have been a definitive date on the issue linked to the budget cap has simply become the beginning of what seems to lie ahead as a tug-of-war between the FIA and Red Bull with opponents – Mercedes and Ferrari above all – more spectators. who interested. The Federation yesterday certified that Red Bull has committed procedural violations by breaking the $ 145 million spending ceiling to a lesser extent. The barrier that divides the infractions from minor to material is 5% of the available money, or 7.25 million dollars.
Following the official press release issued by the Federation, Red Bull in turn issued a note in which it was defined “Surprise and disappointed” reiterating to evaluate all the options available in compliance with the work of the FIA. Among the options in favor of Red Bull there is to appeal against this failure to obtain the certificate of eligibility, but losing the appeal could result in the Milton Keynes team being punished with harsher penalties.
The official note from Red Bull, however, does not seem at all ‘accommodating’ towards the Federation and suggests that the team led by Christian Horner is going to fight to assert his reasons at the cost of running into heavier penalties. As reported by the German newspaper Auto Motor und Sport among the points on which the FIA and Red Bull disagree are, for example, the salaries of personnel blocked from being present at work due to illness. Red Bull has suspended wages during absences from the count presented to the FIA, which instead does not agree on this aspect. Another not indifferent issue is that of the exclusion of the three highest paid managers from the expense calculation, or rather, of the figures who enjoy this exception at Red Bull. Each team does not include the three highest paid figures in the budget and at Red Bull the exemption certainly belongs to Christian Horner and Adrian Newey. The third ‘place’ available, however, is not occupied by Helmut Marko, or at least not by what filters and the economic weight of Helmut Marko – framed by Red Bull as a simple consultant – is one of the topics of discussion with the Federation.
Regarding the sanctions, a hypothesis circulated takes up what George Russell proposed at a press conference in Japan: if the infringement is for example equal to one million dollars then in the budget cap 2023 the amount will be doubled and subtracted, thus reaching two million dollars less. At the same time, the same argument could be made on the hours available in the tunnel by quantifying the performance advantage guaranteed by the sum for which the expenditure ceiling was exceeded. If, for example, it is estimated that a million dollars is worth two tenths of performance, the hours in the wind tunnel will be reduced – with an extra – equal to the established tenths.
