Pozuelo de Alarcón (Madrid), Matadepera (Barcelona) and Boadilla del Monte (Madrid) are the three municipalities – excluding those with less than 2,000 inhabitants – with the highest average annual income per inhabitant in Spain. This is clear from the latest edition of the Household Income Distribution Atlas, corresponding to 2022, which was published today by the INE.
The average incomes in these three locations in 2022 were 29,258, 24,814 and 24,748 euros respectively, well above the 18,316 euros that there was for the whole of Spain that year. Two other Barcelona municipalities, Sant Just Desvern and Sant Cugat del Vallés, also appear at the top of the table, with annual incomes of 23,701 and 23,337 euros per inhabitant respectively.
On the contrary, Huesa (Jaén) is well below that standard, with 7,603 euros per inhabitant; Iznalloz (Granada), with 7,777 euros; El Palmar de Troya (Seville), with 7,779 euros; Albuñol (Granada), with 7,949 euros; and La Mojonera (Almería), with 8,037 euros.
That is to say, that there are few surprises. The income level of Spaniards historically presents a marked difference depending on the territory, with the southern area being the most impoverished and the Levant, Madrid and the north being the richest. Extremadura is the Autonomous Community with the lowest income per person (11,389 euros). Andalusia follows, with 11,558 euros; Murcia, with 11,559; and Castilla-La Mancha, with 12,100 euros.
On the contrary, in 2022 the richest were – again – in the Basque Country (17,461 euros on average), Madrid (17,131), Navarra (15,681) and Catalonia (15,519). In fact, according to the INE report, “88.4% of the municipalities of the Basque Country are among the 25% of those with the highest income in Spain, above 15,073 euros”; They are followed by those from Navarra, with 75%.
On the contrary, 84.4% of the municipalities of Murcia are among the 25% with the lowest income, below 11,537 euros, and Extremadura follows with 82.5%.
Guipúzcoa and its capital, the richest
By province, Guipúzcoa tops the list of annual income, with 18,325 euros of net income per inhabitant in 2022. It is followed by Vizcaya, with 17,131 euros, and Madrid, with 17,131 euros. The provinces with the lowest annual income per capita, in turn, are Almería (10,605 euros on average), Jaén (11,074) and Badajoz (11,158 euros).
Another interesting fact that the INE reveals are the averages by ‘census sections’, which are a statistical subdivision lower than the municipality. In San Sebastián, 60.4% of the census sections have an average income greater than 19,000 euros. The Basque capital comfortably leads the table, followed by Madrid and Barcelona, where there are 39.3% and 35.4% of census sections with an average above 19,000 euros.
On the contrary, Basin (0%), Pontevedra (1.6%), Guadalajara (1.7%) and Huelva (1.8%) present the lowest percentages of citizens who can be considered ‘well-off’. For their part, the provincial capitals that have the highest percentage of sections with average annual income below 9,813 euros are Melilla (31.8%), Alicante (27.6%) and Ceuta (26.8%).
