French television comes with a kind of ‘weather forecast’ for the power consumption in the country. This should encourage people to use less electricity at times when energy consumption peaks.
That weather forecast for electricity already exists on the internet and will soon also appear as an app. The television will follow shortly with icons that will appear on the screen.
On the special website monecowatt.fr shows a map of France. The colors green, orange and red indicate live and hourly whether the power consumption is normal, high or extreme. As with a regular weather forecast, the energy consumption of the next three days is also forecast.
Tips to save energy
If a region turns orange, the French are called upon to take measures and, for example, turn off devices. The site contains a whole series of tips for saving energy. With the color red, the power will go out if the French do nothing and save no energy.
The website is an initiative of the French electricity network operator RTE. He introduced the map with colors in 2020. But it is only in recent days that the website has gained enormous popularity, due to the energy crisis. The French government has also publicly called on the public to keep an eye on the website this winter.
“On some peak days, about 75,000 French people now visit our site,” a spokesperson said. “Already 160,000 French have also registered.” The latter group receives a warning from the RTE in advance by text message or email if the power consumption is in the danger zone and measures are needed.
