with videoFrench President Emmanuel Macron’s center Renaissance party has emerged as the largest in the parliamentary elections. But the score is considerably lower than in the election five years ago. And Macron won’t get the absolute majority either. The party, along with a few small parties that support it, can count on 224 of the 577 seats.

This is apparent from the first forecasts that appeared on Sunday evening after the closing of the polls. Turnout was estimated to be extremely low. Only 46 percent of the French voted. That is one of the lowest turnout in parliamentary elections in recent French history.
The left-wing opposition gets 149 seats. This makes the coalition the second largest group in parliament after Macron. This good score is mainly due to cooperation. Especially for these elections, five left-wing parties formed a new coalition, the New Ecological and Social People’s Union (Nupes).
Marine Le Pen’s party is also doing remarkably well: it won 89 seats, compared to only 8 in the previous elections in 2017. On her election night, her supporters were elated. It was chanted that Macron must resign.
So Macron’s victory is one with a dark edge. In 2017, his coalition won more than 350 seats. And now, with 224 seats, they get less than half of all 577 seats.
Ask for support
In the absence of an absolute majority, Macron will have to ask other left- and right-wing parties to support him over the next five years if he is to implement plans. This may mean that he has to make concessions or commitments to those other parties.
Center-liberal Emmanuel Macron was re-elected as president two months ago after his first term in office (2017-2022). He wants to continue with his reforms over the next five years and has, among other things, announced that he wants to raise the retirement age from 62 to 65 years.
Its popularity has fallen sharply in recent years. And now that he no longer has a majority in parliament, it may become very difficult for him to realize his plans.
