M.ore than 400 volunteer nurses from France are on their way to the Caribbean. Young doctors and nurses in particular came forward to fight the corona virus in the Antilles. France’s overseas territories Guadeloupe and Martinique are currently painting a critical picture: More than 40 percent of the fatalities in the past 24 hours can be traced back to these two areas, reported the French news channel France Info. Accordingly, there were 53 deaths in Guadeloupe and 127 in Martinique.
One of the reasons given for the extent is the advance of the delta variant of the coronavirus. On the other hand, the low vaccination rate: Compared to the approximately 60 percent fully vaccinated on mainland France, just one in five people in the two overseas departments is vaccinated twice.
The volunteers are now supposed to support the hospitals. Two planes left the French capital on Friday. A volunteer told France Info that the Ministry of Health began requesting reinforcements for the two overseas territories on August 8th. According to this, numerous doctors only received the message on Thursday at short notice.
Meanwhile, further protests against the health passport and mandatory vaccination for medical staff are announced. Demonstrations are scheduled for the weekend in more than 200 French cities. For two weeks, visitors to restaurants and cafés have had to show proof of vaccination, a negative test or proof of recovery. This proof is also required before entering large shopping centers and when traveling by train or plane. Last weekend, around 215,000 people took to the streets across the country.
