French actor Jean-Louis Trintignant passed away on Friday at the age of 91. His family has informed the AFP news agency. Trintignant starred in dozens of films from the 1950s, including the Oscar-winning drama Amour and Un homme et une femme† From the late 1950s he was one of the interpreters of the experimental French New Wave cinema.
Trintignant moved to Paris in the early 1950s, where he studied at the famous film school La Fémis. In 1951 he started acting in the theater in the French capital, after which he made his debut on the silver screen in 1955. The film directed by Roger Vadim Et Dieu…. create la femme (And God Created Woman) also marked Brigitte Bardot’s breakthrough.
In the decades that followed, Trintignant built up a wide oeuvre, from smaller films to classics directed by great directors such as Bernardo Bertolucci and Costa-Gavras. Among the latter, Trintignant was awarded the 1969 Cannes Film Festival for his role in the political thriller z†
His most acclaimed recent film is Amour from 2012. In the movie house hit, directed by Michael Haneke, Trintignant can be seen as Georges, the husband of a woman who is increasingly deteriorating due to dementia. The film was awarded a Golden Palm in 2012 and later also won the Oscar for best non-English language film. In 2017 Trintignant and Haneke worked together again for the film happy ending†
The Trintignant family has announced that the actor has died in the presence of loved ones in the south of France and will be buried privately.
