Italy is the guest country of the Frankfurt Book Fair and the planned appearance displeases the actual protagonists, “Italy’s publishers and authors. They feel politically abused.” That’s what “Spiegel” wrote on October 2, 1988, on the occasion of Italy’s first guest country appearance at the Frankfurt Book Fair. In the same article, legendary publisher Inge Feltrinelli is quoted complaining about money wasted on a bombastic trade fair show that would be better spent in the country’s “dusty and stunted libraries.”
