You are never ready to say goodbye and now, F1 must learn to say goodbye to an “inspiring” figure which helped beautify world history. Frank Williams, creator and former CEO of Williams Racing, has passed away at age 79 surrounded by his family as confirmed by the team itself. The Briton, who was admitted to the hospital last Friday, could not cope with health problems that leave the loss of a legend that began to be written in 1976 when he founded, together with Patrick Head, the second most successful team in the history of the Great Circus.
Sir Frank made Williams an iconic team next to the one he conquered nine Constructors ‘Championships and seven pilots’ Championships, figures that they currently maintain, and managed to gather in their ranks great champions such as Alan Jones, Keke Rosberg, Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Famon Hill and Jaqcues Villenueve. It was a lifetime of success linked to competition, which had its most difficult moment in September of last year. Both the British and his daughter Claire, leader of the team at that time, left the team after the sale to an American fund that arrived as consequence of accounts weakened by the pandemic.
Patterns changed, but not team name or sentiment towards the person who built a whole legacy who continues to travel the world under the name of Williams. This is demonstrated by the team statement when announcing the death of its creator: “It is with great sadness, on behalf of the Williams family, the team confirms the death of Sir Frank. After being admitted to the hospital on Friday, he has passed away this morning surrounded by his family. we will pay tribute to a figure as beloved as it is inspiring. We will miss him a lot”.
