Dozens of actresses, such as Bérénice Bejo and Isabelle Huppert, participate in the initiative that joins the massive protests in solidarity with the Iranian people after the death of the young Mahsa Amini, led by the Moral Police for wearing the veil incorrectly .
The global protests to support women in Iran do not stop, neither in the streets nor on social networks. In a recent initiative, more than 50 French-speaking artists posted a video of them cutting a lock of their hair in solidarity with the Iranian people.
The renowned gala actress Juliette Binoche is the first to appear in the images in which she assures, this symbolic gesture is made “for freedom”. The video was posted on the Instagram account @SoutienFemmesIran.
Mixed with the images of other women cutting their hair, the video has a text referring to Mahsa Amini, the young Iranian-Kurdish woman who died on September 16 after the Moral Police arrested her for wearing the veil that covered her hair in a bad way.
“Mahsa Amini was a 22-year-old girl. On September 13, she was arrested and mistreated by the Moral Police until she died. She was only accused of wearing the veil inappropriately. She died for having shown some strands of hair. From the death of Mahsa, the Iranians, led by women, demonstrate risking their lives,” is the message conveyed by the video.
In the images, accompanied by the song ‘Bella Ciao’, actresses such as Marion Cotillard, Jane Birkin (Anglo-French) and Charlotte Gainsbourg, and activists such as Anna Karin Faccendini, president of the Voice of Justice Association, are also seen.
The video was published along with the message “it is impossible not to denounce this terrible repression over and over again. The dead are counted by dozens, including children. The arrests only increase the number of prisoners already detained illegally and frequently tortured. So we decided to respond to the call that was made to us by cutting some of these strands of hair, too.”
The piece comes a day after more than 1,000 film professionals signed a petition “in support of women’s protests in Iran.”
Shows of support for the Iranian people continue around the world
The haircut has become a symbol of the protests in Iran. There are many women in the world who have done this practice. In global demonstrations, women from Greece, Turkey, Italy and Argentina have been seen following suit.
Last Tuesday, October 4, during the debate on the protests in Iran, the Swedish MEP Abir Al-Sahlani cut her hair at the Parliament building in the French city of Strasbourg.
Likewise, defying the authorities, thousands of young people have demonstrated in the streets and in educational centers in Iran, removing their veils and even burning them in public, while cutting their hair and insulting Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the other members of the Government.
After almost three weeks of protests, it is clear that #Iran‘s leadership is facing a serious challenge.
Its opponents are no longer just politicians or people in their 20s. It is now facing teenagers – schoolgirls who are not scared of burning photos of the supreme leader./1. pic.twitter.com/UR1E2jM4ea— Rahimpour Frog (@ranarahimpour) October 5, 2022
Such is the scope of the demonstrations that artists from around the world have transformed their characters to support the Iranian people. For example, the Italian muralist AleXsandro Palombo captured an image of the iconic character Marge Simpson in front of the Iranian consulate in Milan after cutting her hair.
Thousands of Iranians protest against the mobilizations in favor of freedom
Amid the massive protests in favor of freedom, thousands of Iranians took to the streets this Wednesday to defend the government of Ibrahim Raisi and to highlight the “important role” played by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the country’s supreme leader.
Citizens condemned the demonstrations in favor of Mahsa Amini and defended the value of traditions in the country. The protest took place in northern Tehran.
With raised fists, flags and chanting slogans in favor of the Executive, the protesters assured that disobedience is part of a US strategy to destabilize the nation.
The pro-government protest comes after Khamenei defended the repression of the protests last Monday, October 3, assuring that both the police authorities and the paramilitary militias “do their duty” in demonstrations that are not normal. At the time, he pointed out that they are a plan originally developed by the United States and Iran to create chaos.
“I publicly declare that the recent riots and upheavals were a conspiracy engineered by the US, the usurper and fake Zionist regime, their mercenaries and some traitorous Iranians living abroad and helping them,” he stated.
The Iranian supreme leader said that the death of Mahsa Amini is heartbreaking, however, he stressed that “the proper reaction was not for some to create insecurity by burning mosques, banks and private vehicles.”
